Jacksonville Beach will host what organizers hope becomes the "World's Biggest Beach Bike Ride" on Aug. 14, as the newly formed Bike Breakers Foundation kicks off a fundraiser benefiting three Beaches nonprofits.
The ride will send bicyclists and e-bike riders down a two-mile stretch of sand from the Jacksonville Beach SeaWalk Pavilion toward Atlantic Boulevard, with organizers expecting up to 1,000 participants.
"Bike Breakers is the kind of event that reflects the energy, spirit and sense of community that makes Jacksonville Beach such a special place," said Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman. "We're excited to welcome riders and spectators to our beaches while supporting organizations that make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents."
Net proceeds will benefit three local causes: BEAM, which provides emergency financial assistance to Beaches residents in crisis; V for Victory, which helps families through their cancer journeys; and the Two Titmice Foundation, which provides financial assistance to people battling breast cancer.
"The support we receive from the Beaches community is often the difference between stability and crisis for the families we serve," said BEAM Chief Executive Officer Jeff Winkler. "We are honored to be part of an event that brings people together while helping ensure our neighbors have access to the resources they need during difficult times."
Festivities begin at 5 p.m. on the SeaWalk lawn with music, food and drinks from local vendors. Riders must check in by 5:30 p.m., and the ride starts at 6:30 p.m. Afterward, participants can use "Bike Breaker Benefits" for discounts at participating local restaurants and bars.
Beyond the ride itself, organizers are pursuing a Guinness World Record for the largest e-bike party, contingent on turnout and official validation. The current record stands at 405 e-bike riders.
"A thousand bikes riding together down the beach is powerful," said Steven Howard, founder of the Bike Breakers Foundation and a local beach resident. "It's visual, it's inclusive, and it's something Jacksonville can take pride in."
Early bird registration is $35 plus fees. Riders and spectators of all ages and skill levels are welcome, and organizers say the pace will be leisurely rather than competitive. More information and registration are available at jaxbikebreakers.com.
