Tucked inside the serene Dune House Hotel & Spa in Atlantic Beach, a new culinary destination is redefining what it means to dine by the ocean. Coastal Farmer captures a rare aesthetic: a place where coastal chill seamlessly meets upscale elegance.

Walking into the dining room, the atmosphere instantly puts you at ease without losing a shred of sophistication. The decor is refined coastal, boasting natural woods, soft neutral tones and tasteful accents of sea blues and greens. Expansive windows offer a sweeping ocean view, making the space feel open, light and airy. It is an environment that feels distinctly high-end, yet completely free of pretension.

From Sea to Flame

The culinary philosophy is simple yet ambitious: “from sea to flame, coastal dining with a refined edge.” This ethos is felt the moment the cocktail and appetizer courses land on the table.

Some Must-Have Beverages

The Farmer Number Five, a vibrant blend of Tito's vodka, St. Germain strawberry and lemon bitters crowned with a single lychee ball, is sweet, crisp and beautifully balanced. For a more savory experience, the Overland Martini pairs Botanist gin and vermouth with a rich splash of olive oil, served alongside an intentional, briny spread of goat cheese, olives and pickles.

The staff's expertise shines brightest when navigating guests through the drink menu. When an inquiry for an apple martini couldn't be fulfilled due to missing mixes, the staff didn't just apologize: They proactively offered thoughtful alternatives.

The resulting choice, a vibrant Melon Martini, proved to be incredibly refreshing and a perfect match for the beachside setting.

Appetizers That Steal the Show

The true stars of the early evening emerge from the kitchen. The Grilled Calamari is an elite contender for the best calamari you will ever experience at the Beaches. Lightly charred to perfection, the seafood is tender and juicy, resting atop a brilliant canvas of tomato and garlic romesco sauce, bright chermoula and charred lemon. The rich, robust romesco complements the delicate seafood flawlessly.

Not to be outdone, the East Coast Oysters, featuring the local "Shark Bites" variety harvested from New Smyrna Beach, were offered the night of our visit and delivered a beautifully briny expression of Florida's coastal waters. These large, meaty oysters arrive perfectly chilled on ice, accompanied by cocktail sauce, a delicate champagne mignonette and a standout house-made hot sauce. As the staff proudly notes of their fiery condiment, “the secret is in the jar.”

Masterful Mains and a Sweet Finish

For the main course, the Atlantic Tripletail is a triumphant display of seafood execution. The fish is beautifully cooked and flaky, sitting atop a textured bed of large pearl couscous and juicy, blistered heirloom tomatoes. Dotted with a vibrant pea purée and drizzled with a decadent blistered tomato beurre blanc, this dish easily earns a permanent spot on our reorder list.

On the earthier side of the menu, the Down-to-Earth Farm Vegetable Curry offers a gentler, aromatic experience. Served with fragrant jasmine rice and velvety whipped tofu, the dish is delightfully mellow, with fresh mint and scallions bringing an unexpected, refreshing top note to the warm curry spices.

The evening concluded on a high note with a warm Strawberry Tart. Layered with a buttery pâte sucrée and a rich frangipane, the tart balances warmth and sweetness, amplified by a side of fresh, airy Chantilly cream. It is a decadent, comforting dish designed to end the night on a perfect note.

Service with warmth

What elevates Coastal Farmer from a great meal to an unforgettable evening is the service with warmth. Conversational and casually informative, staff members are clearly chosen for their charm and passion for good food.

Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for an exceptional meal on the coast, Coastal Farmer delivers the rhythm of the ocean outside with a little surf, a little sizzle and a lot to savor.

Critic's Choice

Do not leave Coastal Farmer without ordering the Grilled Calamari. The balance of the charred edges with the garlic romesco is absolute perfection.
