Charles E. Mincey, a beloved member of the Beaches community affectionately known as “Sleepy,” entered into his final rest at the age of 70. Sleepy was not a man concerned with material things. His most prized possessions were the relationships he developed over decades of supporting the accomplishments of young athletes in every sport.
Sleepy gave freely of his time, energy and tireless support of each and every player, recognizing their individual strengths and supporting them tirelessly to realize their potential.
Growing up at the Beaches, Sleepy was active in swimming, softball and football. He earned his nickname from his softball teammates, and the name stuck. His love of sports followed him into adulthood. He never missed a game, cheering on players from the sidelines of Pop Warner football field and following players up through the Fletcher Middle School and High School ranks. His presence will be forever missed.
Sleepy is survived by his loving mother, Sarah Batts; adoptive parents Rev. Rodney and Joyce McIntyre; cousins Robert Ellis, Lewis Donaldson (aka Joe Black), Gail Davis, Kesha Smart (Harold), Tiffany Simpson (Alfred), Brittany, Briana (Nika), Welford (Marisa), Tony (Marsha), Sherrie Hayes, Ernie Walden, Jamal Randolph; nephew David Vann; his longtime companion Francis Fields; stepchildren Shalisa Rosario, Runiyah Thomas, Journey Ealy and Gerald Ealy; and mother-in-law Bertha Holland.
He is also remembered by special family members in Metter, Ga., special church friend Varnetta Smith and his church family. Sleepy was preceded in death by his sister Valarie Byrd and stepfather Henry Batts.
Sleepy will forever be missed by all who knew him and loved him. Homegoing services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at St. Andrews AME Church, 125 Ninth St. S., in Jacksonville Beach. A repast will follow. Guests are invited to bring a covered dish prior to the service.
