Atlantic Beach students are invited to test their video game skills to help develop sustainable concepts for the new Marsh Oaks Community Center.
The Minecraft Education Contest is open to all Atlantic Beach students and student teams across four divisions: Elementary School (K-5), Middle School, High School and College. The goal is designing the community center as a state-of-the-art sustainability and resiliency hub. Deadline for entry is Sept. 15.
To enter, student teams must submit a video, no longer than 5 minutes, touring their Minecraft build and explaining how their designed features will serve and protect the city.
"Your mission is to design a space that supports residents during everyday 'blue-sky' days and rapidly activates as a safe haven during extreme weather events," according to the city's release.
The winners of each age group will receive a cash prize or gift card. Winners will be announced at an upcoming Marsh Oaks Community Center workshop and will be invited to present their designs to community members, elected officials, city staff and the Atlantic Beach Environmental Stewardship Committee.
All concepts should address extreme weather resilience with storm-resistant, wind-resistant structures prepared for coastal gales and localized flooding. Rooftop solar panels with battery backups for off-grid reliability during power outages, smart rainwater harvesting, bioswales and edible community orchards or gardens are examples of sustainable elements.
Students should create flexible indoor spaces that can easily transition into emergency shelters. The design should include secure areas for emergency food, medicine and water storage, as well as communication features like backup phone-charging stations and robust neighborhood Wi-Fi zones.
